İpek Çakır : Röportaj isteğimizi kabul ettiğin için teşekkürler. Kendini ve kariyerini genel olarak nasıl tanımlarsın?

Joe Hollow : Bu iyi bir soru. Aslında hiç bu perspektiften bakmamıştım. Tahmin edilemez, her zaman çok eğlenceli, ve her zaman çok iş var. Başkalarıyla çalışmak ve hayallerin hayata geçirilmesini izlemek hoşuma gidiyor. Hem gerçekten zorlukları var hem de bu ayrıcalığa sahip olduğumdan dolayı gurur duyuyorum.

Ä°pek Çakır : Filmin “Disciples” ile ilgili ve yapım süreciyle ilgili bize daha çok bilgi verebilir misin?

Joe Hollow : Disciples gerçekten çok çalışmamızı gerektiren bir iÅŸti. Çok özel bir ÅŸey ortaya çıkardık. BaÅŸtan sona takım çalışmasıydı. Çok tecrübe edindik ama aynı zamanda üstesinden gelmemiz gereken de çok ÅŸey vardı. Wolfgang ve benim yapmamız gereken görevler çok ağırdı ve bu hepsiyle birden uÄŸraşıp iÅŸi ortaya çıkarmamızı zorlaÅŸtırıyordu. Ön prodüksiyon süreci çok uzun sürdü. Linnea Quigley’nin bu noktada önemli katkısı oldu. Bana her adımda casting ile ilgili yardımcı oldu. Büyük bir aile olduk. Katkıda bulunanlar hakkında da konuÅŸmak gerekir. Tim Hays, Chris Mills, Debra Lamb, Jesse Kozel, Stacy Hammon, Wolfgang Meyer….Liste böyle devam eder.

İpek Çakır : Çalışmalarını yaratırken geçmişte yaşadığınız tecrübelerden ya da durumlardan ilham alıyor musun?

Joe Hollow : İnanıyorum ki hayatımdaki tecrübeler bana ilham verdi. Hem pozitif hem de negatif yönden. Örneğin Cut filminde oynadığım karakter anılarımdan ve çok daha genç olduğum zamanlarda hissettiğim nefret ve öfkeden etkilenilerek yaratılmıştı. Bu unsurlar karakteri daha güçlü hale getirmemi sağladı. Aynı şeyi günlük olaylar, tepkiler, ve duygularda birşeyler görmek yeteneğini kullanarak da yaptım. Bunu doğru şekilde kullandığınızda karakterin başarısını yükseltir.

İpek Çakır : Sence korku filmlerini özel yapan ve dünya çapında sevilmesini sağlayan şey nedir?

Joe Hollow : Biraz da olsa belli kalıpların dışına çıkmanıza ve de şöyle diyebilirim ki hiç bir zaman tecrübe etmeyeceğiniz şeyleri tecrübe etmenize izin veriyorlar. Sadece korku filmlerinden alabileceğiniz bir duygu kasırgası sağlıyorlar. Korku filmlerinin bir çok değişik türü var bu nedenle de bu duygular da çeşitleniyor.

İpek Çakır : Düşüncene ve tecrübelerine göre bağımsız bir film ya da ana akım film yapmanın avantajları ve dezavantajları neler?

Joe Hollow : Avantajı “hiçbir kural uygulanmaz” sloganı. Filmi yaratmak için yapman gerekenleri yaparsın. Dezavantaj ise para konusu tabi ki. Bence son 2 filmde iki türden de biraz etkilendik. Bağımsız film bütçesiyle çekim yaptık ama set konusunda ve prodüksiyon konusunda çıtayı yüksek tuttuk böylece iÅŸlerin ana akım film setinde olduÄŸu gibi yürümesini istedik. Çok sayıda zorluk var ama tekrar söylüyorum ki bağımsız filmde nerdeyse her ÅŸeyi deneyebilirsiniz.

İpek Çakır : Filmlerinde yer almasını istediğin aktörler, aktrisler var mı?

Joe Hollow : Şimdiye kadar Linnea Quigley, Tony Todd, Brinke Stevens, Michael Berryman, Kane Hodder, Angus Scrimm, Debbie Rochon, Bill Moseley, Debra Lamb ve daha bir çok harika oyuncuyla çalıştığım için çok mutluyum. Ama evet, hepimizin hayalleri var bu nedenle benim de beklentilerim neden olmasın, hayallerim gerçek olabilseydi şu an bulunduğum noktada belirteceğim isimler, Sean Connery, Dennis Hopper (huzur içinde yatsın), Betty White, Christopher Lambert, Morgan Freeman.

İpek Çakır : Kendini yakın hissettiğin ve izlemeyi sevdiğin türler hangileri?

Joe Hollow : Hem yazar hem de yönetmen olarak şu ana kadar 2 tane korku filmi yaptım. Bunlardan biri yakın zamanda yaptığım Disciples ve bence o sadece bir korku filmi olmanın çok ötesinde. Cut filmi de aynı şekilde bence tam olarak bir korku filmi değil. Kane, Tony ve Michael yer aldığından dolayı insanlar öyle sanabiliyor ama daha çok korku filmleri öğelerine sahip bir gerilim dram olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Favori filmlerim The Godfather, Shawshank Redemption, Rocky, Legends of the Fall, Silence of the Lambs, The Exorcist, Highlander, Scarface, True Romance ve daha çok var. Devam ettikçe favorilerim korku türünden uzaklaşıyor.

İpek Çakır : Avrupa ve Asya sineması hakkındaki düşüncelerin neler?

Joe Hollow : Farklı kültürler kesinlikle hoşuma gidiyor. İlginç buluyorum. Bazen birkaç kişi toplanılıp gidilen alemlerde buluyorum kendimi. İlgimi çekiyor. Film söz konusu olduğunda da hiçbir önyargıya sahip değilimdir.

İpek Çakır : Oyuncu olarak da yer aldığınız filmleriniz var. Bu tecrübeler sizin için nasıldı? Aynı zamanda oynamış olmayı istediğiniz bir karakter var mı bunu da sormak istiyorum.

Joe Hollow : Yıllardır gördüğüm karakter rollerinden
imrendiklerim çok var. Rocky bunlardan biri. Çok ilham verici. Oyunculuğa gelince, evet filmlerde oyuncu olarak kısa da olsa yer aldım. Özellikle bana ait olan Cut filminde. Çok iyi bir deneyimdi. Bir sanatçı olarak tecrübe edinmek istiyorsunuz ve oynamayı seçtiğim karakterler de benim için uygundu. Kendime aktör demem ise zor. Oyunculara ve ortaya çıkardıkları işe büyük saygım var. Oynadığım filmlere katkıda bulunmuş olmaktan dolayı mutluyum ama öncelikli olarak bir yazar ve yönetmen olarak kalmayı tercih ediyorum. Bir oyuncu olarak yeteneğim en iyi ihtimalle ortalama düzeyde oluyor.

İpek Çakır : Çalışmadığın zamanlarda vaktini nasıl geçirmeyi seviyorsun?

Joe Hollow : Her zaman çalıştığım için buna bir cevap bulmak zor olacak. Sanırım çocuklarım derim. Onlar benim hayatım. Onlar için çalışıyorum, yaşıyorum ve ölürdüm. Kısacası benim için önemli olan çalışmak ve bebeklerim diyebilirim. Ya da Wolfgang Meyer ve Stacy Hammon ile telefonda zaman geçiriyorum!

İpek Çakır : Gelecek projelerin hakkında bilgi almak isteriz. Bize onlar hakkında daha fazla şey anlatır mısın?

Joe Hollow : Sıradaki filmim için çalışıyorum. Adı Cannibals. Fazla bir şey söyleyemem çünkü daha tamamlamamıza çok var. Henüz film resmi olarak ön prodüksiyona bile girmiş değil ama çalışmaya devam ediyorum. Senaryosunu tamamladım.

İpek Çakır : Thanks for accepting our interview. How do you describe yourself and your career generally?

Joe Hollow : That’s a good one. I never really looked from that perspective. It’s very unpredictable, always a lot of fun and always a lot of work. I enjoy working with others and watching the vision come to life. It’s a real challenge and honor to have this privilege.

Ä°pek Çakır : Can you tell us more about the movie “Disciples” and the making process?

Joe Hollow : Disciples was a real challenge. We pulled off something very special. Was a team effort all the way. A whole lot of experience but at the same time a whole of gorilla going on. The workload Wolfgang and I take on is hefty to pull off what’s been pulled off. A tremendous amount of preproduction time. Linnea Quigley was a huge part in this. She helped me with casting every step of the way. Her good works paid off big for us. It became one big family. The contributions put forth is something to speak of. People like Tim Hays, Chris Mills, Debra Lamb, Jesse Kozel, Stacy Hammon, Wolfgang Meyer..The list goes on.

Ä°pek Çakır : Are there any special experiences or situations in your past that you got inspired when you’re creating your works?

Joe Hollow : I do believe my life’s experiences have been an inspiration. In both a positive and negative way. The character I played in Cut for instance was driven by memories and bent up hate and anger from when I was much younger. Those elements helped me make the character stronger. I’ve done the same with talent where you see a little something in there everyday actions, reactions and emotions that when used just right can raise the bar on the character.

İpek Çakır : What do you think makes horror movies special and makes them loved worldwide?

Joe Hollow : They let you walk outside the box a bit or should I say experience what you will never experience. In most cases anyway. They provide a whirlwind of emotions you only get from a horror movie. Granted there are many different types of horror movies so these emotions do vary of course.

İpek Çakır : In your opinion and according to your experiences what are the advantages and disadvantages of making an independent or mainstream film?

Joe Hollow : Well, the advantages are the “no rules applied” slogan. You do what you have to do to get the film done. The disadvantage is “the money” of course. I think we have touched on a bit of both here with the last 2 films. Shooting with an independent budget but raising the bar on set and in production to flow more like a mainstream set. So many challenges and again with indie film you can try just about anything.

İpek Çakır : Do you have any names of actors or actresses that you wish to be included in your films?

Joe Hollow : I’ve been so blessed thus far to work with Linnea Quigley, Tony Todd, Brinke Stevens, Michael Berryman, Kane Hodder, Angus Scrimm, Debbie Rochon, Bill Moseley, Debra Lamb and so many other who are just wonderful. But yes, we all have dreams so why not shoot for the stars right, if dreams could come true I’d say from where I’m at now, Sean Connery, Dennis Hopper (RIP), Betty White, Christopher Lambert, Morgan Freeman.

Ä°pek Çakır : Which genres do you feel close to when you’re making or watching movies?

Joe Hollow : So far as a writer director I’ve done two horror films. One of them being the recent Disciples and it’s much more than just a horror film. Cut on the other hand is not really a horror film at all. People assume because they see Kane and Tony and Michael of course but it’s more of a suspense drama with horror elements. My favorites are The Godfather, Shawshank Redemption, Rocky, Legends of the Fall, Silence of the Lambs, The Exorcist, Highlander, Scarface, True Romance and so on. More so my favorites steer away from horror.

İpek Çakır : What do you think about the European and Asian cinema? Are you interested in them?

Joe Hollow : I enjoy different culture absolutely. Very interesting. I find myself going on those binges where you gather up a few at once and go to town. I certainly do find interest there. I have no prejudice whatsoever when it comes to film.

Ä°pek Çakır : You’ve also got titles as an actor. How do you feel about your acting experiences? Also I’d like to ask if you’ve got a character that you wish you acted?

Joe Hollow : I envy so many character roles that have been seen over the years. Rocky is certainly one of them. Very inspiring. As far as acting, well, I had some short works as an actor. Mostly in my own film Cut. It was a great experience. As an artist you want to experience and the characters I’ve chosen to do have been ok with me. It’s hard to call myself an actor and the work they put in. I’m glad I was able to contribute to the films I’ve acted in but I choose to primarily remain a writer and a director. My talents as an actor are average at best.

Ä°pek Çakır : How do you like to spend your time when you’re not working?

Joe Hollow : Well since I’m always working it will be hard to find an answer. I guess I would say my kids. They are my life. I work for them, I live and die for them. So for me it’s work and the babies. Or I’m on the phone with Wolfgang Meyer or Stacy Hammon!

Ä°pek Çakır : We’d like to know more about your upcoming projects. Can you tell us more about them ?

Joe Hollow : I am working on my next film and it’s called Cannibals. I can’t say too much because we are so far away. The film is not even officially in preproduction yet but I am working on it. The script is done.
